Question: Refund Resident Tax
I received an income tax refund on my tax return, but when will I receive a refund for resident tax, prefectural resident tax, and forest environment tax?
Answer
In principle, there are no refunds for resident tax, prefectural resident tax, and forest environment tax (from FY 2024 onward).
Income tax is withheld at source (an estimated amount is deducted in advance) when receiving salary payments. Therefore, by making a year-end adjustment and filing a final income tax return, you will refund the overpaid income tax.
On the other hand, unlike income tax, there is no withholding system for resident tax, prefectural resident tax, and forest environment tax. The tax amount is calculated based on the tax return submitted by the individual.
Therefore, since the taxpayers pay the finalized tax amount, there is no refund in principle.
However, you may be eligible for a refund if you submit your tax return about one year after the due date or if you have declared income such as dividends or stock transfers. If you are eligible for a refund, a municipality will send you a notice of the refund at any time, depending on when you filed your tax return.
